One new species, four newly recorded genera, and two newly recorded species of diatoms are de-scribed from China. They are Sellaphora fuxianensis sp. nov. Li, Sellaphora Mereschkowsky, Karayevia Round & Bukhtiyarova, Placoneis Mereschkowsky, Fallacia Stickle & Mann, Placoneisprespanensis Levkov, Krstic & Nakov, and Fallacia lucinensis (Hustedt) D. G. Mann. All taxa were collected from Lake Fuxian in Yunnan Province, China. These species were observed with light and scanning electron microscopes, and their taxonomic characters are discussed.  相似文献

Paraphysomonas faveolata sp. nov., the eighth described species of this genus of colourless chrysophycean flagellates, has heterokont flagellation, parabasal nucleus and silicified body-scales. It is the fourth known species with meshwork scales, these being of two types: flat “cobweb” scales and scales with a planar “honeycombed” extension arising from a “cobweb” base. The organism is compared with the other species of the genus and the case considered for placing forms with meshwork scales in a new genus, separate from forms with spined scales. This step is not taken and the taxonomic status of the genus is discussed in relation to the Ochromonadaceae and other genera of the Synuraceae.  相似文献

The combined consequences of the multi‐stressors of pH and nutrient availability upon the growth of a marine diatom were investigated. Thalassiosira weissflogii was grown in N‐ or P‐limited batch culture in sealed systems, with pH commencing at 8.2 (“extant” conditions) or 7.6 (“ocean acidification” [OA] conditions), and then pH was allowed to either drift with growth, or was held fixed. Results indicated that within the pH range tested, the stability of environmental pH rather than its value (i.e., OA vs. extant) fundamentally influenced biomass accumul‐ation and C:N:P stoichiometry. Despite large changes in total alkalinity in the fixed pH systems, final biomass production was consistently greater in these systems than that in drifting pH systems. In drift systems, pH increased to exceed pH 9.5, a level of alkalinity that was inhibitory to growth. No statis‐tically significant differences between pH treatments were measured for N:C, P:C or N:P ratios during nutrient‐replete growth, although the diatom expre‐ssed greater plasticity in P:C and N:P ratios than in N:C during this growth phase. During nutrient‐deplete conditions, the capacity for uncoupled carbon fixa‐tion at fixed pH was considerably greater than that measured in drift pH systems, leading to strong contrasts in C:N:P stoichiometry between these treatments. Whether environmental pH was stable or drifted directly influenced the extent of physiological stress. In contrast, few distinctions could be drawn between “extant” versus “OA” conditions for cell physiology.  相似文献

A new automated procedure for nanomolar nitrate analysis was applied to the study of uptake of low nitrate concentrations (< 100 ngat l–1) by phytoplankton. The precision of this analytical method (± 3 ngat l–1) made it possible to monitor the absorption of very low quantities of nitrate over short term periods by a low cell-density culture of the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, where the levels of particulate nitrogen and chlorophyll were equivalent to those found in oligotrophic areas (0.5 µgat N l–1 and 0.4 µg l–1 respectively). By continuous monitoring of nitrate disappearance from the culture medium, we are able to describe accurately the transient uptake responses of the diatom after a spike addition of trace quantities of nitrate and thus to provide new information on the still largely unknown small-scale phenomenon of pulsed nitrate supply in the upper layer of stratified oceans and rapid uptake of these nitrate patches by phytoplankton.The results show that a N-limited culture of Phaeodactylum tricornutum is immediately capable of taking up trace quantities of nitrate (< 100 ngat l–1) at high rates (0.10–0.14 h–1) . These initial rates are one order of magnitude higher than the theoretical rates calculated from the Michaelis-Menten equation and are close to the level of V max (0.15 h–1) obtained when cells are exposed to saturating nitrate concentrations. This rapid initial uptake would be a considerable advantage in oligotrophic areas where nanomolar nitrate supply is thought to be episodic. The present results suggest that phytoplankton evolve adaptations to utilize the available nitrate at the spatial and temporal scales at which it occurs. On the other hand, we can consider this physiological adaptation as evidence of nitrate pulses in the field which would invalidate the steady-state approach to the oligotrophic ecosystems.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of Zn availability on growth rate (μ), cell morphology, and elemental stoichiometry and incorporation rate in two marine diatoms. For the coastal diatom Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve, the half‐saturation constant (KS) for growth was 4.1 pM Zn2+, and growth ceased at ≤ 2.6 pM Zn2+, whereas for the oceanic diatom Thalassiosira oceanica Hasle, KS was 0.5 pM Zn2+, and μ remained at ~40%μmax even at 0.3 pM Zn2+. Under Zn‐limiting (Zn‐L) conditions, S. costatum decreased cell size significantly, leading to an 80% increase in surface area to volume ratio (SA/V) at Zn2+ of 3.5 pM compared to Zn‐replete (Zn‐R) conditions (at Zn2+ of 13.2 pM), whereas T. oceanica’s morphology did not change appreciably. Cell quotas of C, N, P, Si, and chl a significantly decreased under Zn limitation in S. costatum (at Zn2+ of 3.5 pM), whereas Zn limitation in T. oceanica (at Zn2+ of 0.3 pM) had little effect on quotas. Elemental stoichiometry was ~85C:10N:9Si:1P and 81C:9N:5Si:1P for S. costatum, and 66C:5N:2Si:1P and 52C:6N:2Si:1P for T. oceanica, under Zn‐R and Zn‐L conditions, respectively. Incorporation rates of all elements were significantly reduced under Zn limitation for both diatoms, but particularly for Si in S. costatum, and for C in T. oceanica, despite its apparent tolerance of low Zn conditions. With [Zn2+] in some parts of the ocean being of the same order (~0.2 to 2 pM) as our low Zn conditions for T. oceanica, our results support the hypothesis that in situ growth and C acquisition may be limited by Zn in some oceanic species.  相似文献

1. Long‐term data on the meteorology, hydrology, physicochemistry and plankton of a reservoir and its tributaries in SE Germany run from 1976 until now. This dimictic reservoir changed from mesotrophic to eutrophic in the 1970s, remained eutrophic in the 1980s and returned to the mesotrophic state after a sharp reduction in P loading in 1990. 2. Phytoplankton biomass reaches an annual maximum in spring and consists almost entirely of diatoms. While Asterionella formosa was dominant until 1990, Aulacoseira subarctica became more frequent at the end of the 1990s and was particularly abundant in years with short winters. 3. Statistical analyses suggested that these changes were triggered primarily by the mild winters that were frequent after 1988. Climate‐related hydrophysical variables and the initial biomass of the diatoms at the beginning of the year, considered as an ‘inoculum’, were identified as most important. These variables explained 39% of the total variance of the relative abundance, whereas the change in trophic conditions was responsible for about 20%. 4. The absolute and relative abundance of A. subarctica was positively related to short ice cover, early ice‐out and a long‐lasting spring circulation. Owing to its physiological traits, and particularly its ability to survive under low‐light conditions, A. subarctica benefitted from short, mild winters. Under such conditions, it could sustain or establish a high initial biomass, whereas the concentrations of the other diatoms decreased over winter. However, this advantage may be lost if further warming causes an early onset of summer stratification. Because of its low population growth rate and requirement for high turbulence, A. subarctica needs long, cold springs to exploit the improved starting conditions and to become abundant. 5. In contrast to A. subarctica, A. formosa required a substantial soluble reactive phosphorus supply to compete successfully. The eutrophic conditions until 1990 were the prerequisite for its mass growth under low‐light and low‐temperature conditions during the spring. After reduction in P concentration from 1990, A. formosa declined and other diatom species became more abundant. 6. These other diatoms may be viewed as ‘stopgaps’ when conditions were not favourable for A. subarctica or A. formosa. Diatoma elongatum exploited brief circulation periods in years with low P loading. Synedra acus and Fragilaria crotonensis, because of their poor competitive ability at low light intensity, reached high density in the upper water column in the transitional period between spring circulation and summer stratification. 7. Our study suggests that climate‐related variables have crucial impacts on the spring phytoplankton dynamics of deep stratified waterbodies. They can mask the consequences of changes in the trophic conditions and, corresponding to the functional traits of the different phytoplankton species, also decisively control their relative abundances. In this reservoir, the warmer winters and prolonged spring circulations did not only lead to high phytoplankton biomass (despite considerably reduced nutrient loads) but also cause a marked shift in the diatom assemblage during the spring bloom.  相似文献

Didymosphenia geminata is a large, invasive, freshwater diatom that can produce distinctive and robust mucilaginous stalks. Over the last two decades, there has been a worldwide increase in the distribution and severity of D. geminata blooms. These dense, persistent blooms can have severe impacts on native species and ecosystem functioning. D. geminata is usually identified by microscopic methods that are time consuming, resource intensive, and dependent upon expert taxonomic identification, so the extent of surveillance programs has been limited. As an alternative, we have developed a TaqMan quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) assay for sensitive and rapid detection and enumeration of D. geminata in environmental samples. Species-specific QPCR primers and probe were designed by aligning the D. geminata 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence with closely related diatoms. The QPCR assay was linear (R2 = 1.00) over a detection range of eight orders of magnitude with a lower limit of approximately two D. geminata cells. QPCR analysis of environmental samples employed the comparative cycle threshold (CT)-method with an exogenous plasmid used as an internal reference standard. The assay was evaluated using samples collected during a survey of D. geminata in three rivers in the South Island, New Zealand, and from 13 international locations where D. geminata is known to be present. Positive QPCR amplifications were confirmed as the correct amplification product through direct DNA sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA sequences suggests that D. geminata is more closely related to species in the family Cymbellaceae rather than Gomphonemataceae as currently classified.  相似文献

The structure of the motile pennate diatom Caloneis amphisbaena Cleve is described, with emphasis on the lateral, lobed pyrenoid with neither a limiting membrane nor penetration by thylakoids, an interphase nucleus with centers of condensed chromatin, paired dictyosomes, and mitochondria cradled within the chambers of the valve. Microfilaments forming two bundles which lie beneath each raphe slit are of the same size and appearance as actin microfilaments associated with other motile systems.  相似文献

星云湖硅藻群落响应近现代人类活动与气候变化的过程   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
随着人类活动的增强与全球气候变暖的持续,近年来云南湖泊的生态系统功能持续退化,而目前对云南湖泊生态系统的研究还主要集中于单一环境压力的生态效应。以星云湖为研究对象,通过沉积物记录与现代监测资料,识别在湖泊富营养化、气候变化以及人类强烈干扰下硅藻群落结构响应的过程,并甄别驱动群落变化的主要环境压力及其强度。结果显示随着湖泊生产力水平(如沉积物叶绿素a浓度)的增加,硅藻物种组成发生了明显的变化,主成分分析表明了水体富营养化是驱动群落变化的主要环境因子(r=-0.63,P0.001)。简约模型与方差分解的结果表明近200年来(钻孔长度38cm),湖泊营养水平和水动力是驱动星云湖硅藻群落变化的主要环境因子,分别解释了群落变化的18.8%和2.9%;而1951年以后,湖泊营养水平和温度分别解释了硅藻群落结构变化的31.4%和26.8%。研究结果表明了硅藻群落长期变化的主控因子是湖泊营养水平,而人类活动及气候变化等可以通过改变湖泊水动力及湖水温度来驱动硅藻群落的演替,同时抚仙湖-星云湖的连通性也对硅藻群落的演替产生了一定影响。  相似文献
